Q: Who are Bomber County Pipes & Drums?

A: Based in Lincolnshire, we are a premier Scottish traditional pipe band dedicated to performing at community events, parades, country shows, and aviation memorial sites across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands. Our band honours Lincolnshire’s rich RAF Bomber Command heritage while sharing a passion for high-impact pipe and drum music.

 

Q: How did Bomber County Pipes & Drums get it's name?

A: With a number of our founding members, including our two co-founders both living in LIncolnshire, we thought it only right, to give a nod to the history of Lincolnshire during the war.  Lincolnshire got the nickname of 'Bomber County' because it housed the highest concentration of Royal Air Force (RAF) bomber stations and airfields in England during World War II.  This also aided with the design of our logo and cap badge, which is proudly worn by all of our members.

 

Q: Do I need to have a military background to join?

A: Not at all! While we proudly celebrate our region's aviation history and frequently perform at heritage venues, our band is open to everyone in the civilian community regardless of background.

 

Joining, Learning & Membership

Q: Do I need prior experience to join the band?

A: No. We welcome experienced pipers and drummers, returning players, and complete beginners. Tuition is available for those starting from scratch on practice chanters or drum pads.

 

Q: Do I need to own my own bagpipes or drum right away?

A: Beginners do not need full instruments immediately. Pipers start learning fingerwork on an affordable practice chanter, while drummers start on a practice pad with sticks. We advise consulting our instructors before purchasing full sets of pipes or drums.

 

Q: How does the band support neurodivergent members?

A: We are proudly a neurodivergent-friendly and inclusive band. We actively accommodate autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, and other neurodivergent members through flexible learning paces, clear rehearsal structures, structured break times to prevent sensory overload, and patient peer mentoring.

 

Q: What does it mean that Bomber County Pipes & Drums is a neurodivergent-friendly band?

A: It means we intentionally structure our rehearsals, teaching methods, and band culture to be inclusive of members who are autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, dyspraxic, or otherwise neurodivergent. We believe everyone deserves a supportive environment where they can learn and perform without pressure or masking.

 

Q: Do I need a formal diagnosis to benefit from accommodations?

A: No. We do not require any formal medical diagnosis or paperwork. If a specific learning style, environment tweak, or practice pacing helps you learn better, we support it—no questions asked.

 

Q: How do practice sessions handle sensory sensitivities (like loud volume)?

A: Pipe bands are naturally loud, but we take sensory needs seriously:

• Hearing Protection: We encourage and accommodate high-fidelity earplugs and noise-reducing ear defenders during practices.

• Sensory Breaks: Anyone is free to step out of the practice room for a quiet breather whenever needed without explanation.

• Sectional Splits: We break into smaller, quieter practice spaces (e.g., chanter and pad work) before coming together as a full band.

 

Q: How are sheet music and drum scores taught for dyslexic or dyspraxic members?

A: We adapt our teaching to match how your brain processes information:

• Sheet music and drum notation can be provided in custom sizes, high-contrast colors, or simplified visual formats.

• We place a heavy emphasis on auditory learning, recorded tracks, and physical muscle-memory practice alongside written notation.

• One-on-one peer guidance is available to walk through tricky passages at a reduced tempo.

 

Q: What if I struggle with rigid schedules or executive dysfunction?

A: We understand that life, burnout, and executive function challenges happen. While regular attendance helps with band performance, we foster a compassionate atmosphere where open communication is valued over rigid penalties. You will always be supported by your bandmates.

 

Q: Can I get involved if I don't play an instrument?

A: Absolutely! Our supporters network welcome non-playing members who assist with event logistics, band administration, equipment handling, and public relations.
